      Culture! Culture! Culture!

Home to 5 volcanoes, including the sacred Mt. Agung, Kintamani and Mt. Batur must rank among the most dramatic and accessible live volcanoes to be found anywhere. Literally a volcano within a volcano, visitors can drive along the rim of a 8km wide caldera while looking across the still active Mt. Batur still spouting lava and slowly building new height. In the morning we visit a traditional Barong Dance - a classic dance-drama portraying the eternal struggle between the good and evil (the religious and the profane) ending when a group of entranced men run amok and try to stab themselves only to be rescued from their frenzy by a local priest able to break their spells with holy water. Then a visit to the village of Mas - a community of highly-skilled wood workers. Mount & Lake Batur at beautiful Kintamani - a town perched on the edge of a volcano's rim offering panoramic views of a still active volcano.

Lunch: an Indonesian buffet lunch with a volcanic view at a Kintamani Restaurant.

After Lunch: Kehen Temple - one of the finest temples in Bali. See the splendid closed Balinese gateway leading to a unique shrine of 11 tapering meru roofs, the highest architectural honor bestowed on this place believed to be the resting place for visiting gods.

End the day with a tour of Celuk, the silver and gold crafts areas of Bali.

Day 5: Full Day Ubud Herbal Nature Walks w/ Lunch & Foot Massage in Ubud
An "off-the-beaten-track" 3.5 hour walking tour of Ubud's hinterlands in the company of Bali naturalist Made Westi. The trip includes treks among the rice-fields; visits to quiet moss-laden farmer's temples; explanations of Bali's plants and their medicinal uses; and lunch at a local restaurant before re-emerging in the village of Ubud. Along the way, if time permits, we'll perhaps take a quick swim in a local watering hole on the river or sip from a refreshing coconut, freshly-picked from a nearby tree. Made's remarkable knowledge of plants and their medical uses often sees him scamper off to the path only to return with a cutting of fresh galangal, lemon grass or ginger. He'll even fetch a fresh coconut to quench your thirst.

The tour ends at a local spa for a delicious lunch, including a revitalizing foot massage.

      > A half-day tour starting with a visit at the Royal Temple of Taman Ayun at Mengwi. Built in 17th century, this impressive and spacious temple is surrounded by a wide moat, creating the sensation of standing in the middle of a lake. The temple itself has three ascending courtyards, each representing an increasing level of perfection in the Bali Hindu cosmos. Later, a visit to Alas Kedaton Holy Monkey Forest, where hundreds of "tame" and very mischievous monkeys live in the forest surrounding the temple.

      > The final stop of the day will be at the dramatic Tanah Lot sea temple. This is one of the most splendid temples in Bali. Perching atop an enormous rock, it is completely surrounded by the waters of the Indian Ocean during high tide. Don't miss this opportunity to watch the sunset over this temple.

      > For this evening we have saved something very special! A 19th century Javanese Dining Experience - at an historic recreation of a Central Java waroeng - set in the gardens of the Tugu Bali Hotel. The "Waroeng Tugu" is a lovingly exact recreation of a early 1900's traditional Javanese Kitchen and "waroeng" located at the picturesque Tugu Bali Hotel. Available only on an advance booking basis, the "Waroeng Tugu" sits in a tropical garden under a rustic open-sided pavilion surrounded by Javanese mystic figures in statue.
